The thought of lice coming back into your home after you’ve had them removed from your child’s head is scary for all parents. Lice re-infestations are very common amongst children who’ve just had them removed – especially when ineffective lice removal methods are used.
However, there are certain precautions that you can take to ensure that chances of re-infestation are limited.
The majority of lice removal methods leave nits behind. The only way to extract nits from an infested head is to remove them individually by hand. There’s no comb fine enough to pull nits off hair strands. Effective removal of lice cannot happen with the nits being extracted.
Yes, your child may have been the one who caught lice but lice spread very easily. Way too often, people have lice without even realizing that they do which is why it’s important to get each family member’s head checked. If you’re child has best friends which they always play with – get their head checked too!
Lice can fall off hair and end up on clothes and bedding all the time. Don’t assume that just because everyone’s head are clean means that there are no more lice in the house. They can be lurking around the couch, your child’s jackets and so many other places in the house. Wash all your clothes, bedding, cushions etc. in hot water to kill any lice that may be on them. Vacuum your carpet to make sure there are none wandering around there either.
Tell your child to avoid sharing jackets, scarves, hats and any other articles of clothing that can contain lice. The same applies for hairbrushes, combs and hair-ties.
If you’re child has long hair, it’s best to keep it braided, in a pony tail or in a bun. The less surface area the hair has, the fewer the chances of re-infestation.
