Having Head Lice Is Nothing To Be Ashamed About – Tell That To Your Kids

June 14, 2017

The world is teeming with people—7.347 billion (maybe more) as per newest world population statistics. We meet a lot of these people daily. We meet them in the subway or while waiting for the bus. We say ‘hello’ to them in the office kitchen while pouring some black magic in our mugs. We nod at them in the hallway, street, grocery store, and Justin Bieber concert. They are parents just like us, with kids of different ages. This doesn’t stop most of these people from shaming your parenting skills at the first hint of head lice!

No Shame, No Gain – The Truth about Head Lice Infestations

You will know what it feels like to be an outcast in your group of classy moms the moment you open your mouth and say, “My son has head lice…”

Forget that you have been car-pooling your kids forever; one mention of the word is enough to cause panic and potentially destroy your friendship.

Other well-meaning parents will ‘help’ by listing down ‘effective’ but toxic OTC shampoos or DIY lice removal remedies that don’t really work. Of course this is assuming you tell the inner circle of friends, acquaintances, school-nurses, and strangers you meet on the street in the first place!

“Head lice have their own animal-rights group, or they may as well. The National Pediculosis Association doesn’t advocate rights of lice i.e. let lice live with dignity. But it does oppose pediculidal lice removal treatments” – P.J. O’Rourke

The question remains; why is there so much shame and embarrassment associated with head lice?

Why don’t parents talk about this crawling issue with their children’s school or parents of their friends? When will we stop living in fear of receiving that note from the school-nurse?

Why the Embarrassment? Examining This Issue under a Microscope

There is a common misconception that head lice are attracted to dirty hair. This means having lice somehow reflects poorly on someone’s hygiene or a parent’s ability to ensure their kids bathe. That is simply not true.

Other well-known facts about head lice infestations (that show how common the common head louse is really) are:

  • Children between 6–13 contract them although older kids and adults can also have a bad case of head lice
  • Catching head lice in long hair is more common
  • It’s more common (two to four times) for girls to catch head lice than boys
  • Head lice spreads through head-to-head contact or sharing hair accessories

Yes, getting the lice letter is mortifying. Not as mortifying to your children who will most likely face bullying and teasing at school, even after you solve the issue.  Have the talk about head lice today…visit Urgent Lice Removal’s lice removal and inspection clinic in Miami Beach.
