What Are Nits?
Nits are the minuscule, oval-shaped spawn that head lice leave on the hair shafts. These bloodsucking parasites thrive on human scalps and secrete a sticky substance that attaches the nits close to the scalp, making them difficult to detect.
These nits are usually the size of a pinhead and appear yellowish-white. They can easily camouflage with the color of the hair or scalp, but a meticulous examination behind the ears and at the nape of the neck can reveal them.
It’s worth noting that nits may still be present even after a lice infestation has been eradicated. Though they are not an indication of an active infestation, eliminating them is still crucial to prevent the possibility of reinfestation.
What Do Nits or lice eggs Look Like?
Meanwhile, head lice are minute, wingless parasites that dwell on human scalps and feed on blood. They are often grayish-white or tan in color, about the size of a sesame seed, with flattened bodies and six legs, which enable them to move effortlessly through hair. Detecting them can be challenging as they move rapidly and blend in with hair and scalp color.
Symptoms of head lice
Typical symptoms of head lice include itching, a tickling sensation, visible lice or nits, redness, inflammation, restlessness, and difficulty sleeping. However, not everyone with head lice experiences these symptoms, and some may have a lice infestation without noticing any symptoms.
How do I treat lice?
Fortunately, several treatments are available for head lice, including OTC medications, prescription medications, manual removal, and home remedies. It’s crucial to follow the instructions on the product carefully and repeat the treatment as necessary to ensure complete elimination of lice and nits. Furthermore, it’s essential to clean bedding, clothing, and other items that may have come into contact with lice to prevent the spread of lice to others. If you have concerns or are unsure how to treat lice, consulting a healthcare provider for guidance is essential.
